Our newest premium variety, FL19-006, now has a name – ‘Sharper.’ The name is
a tribute to Dr. Ralph Sharpe, the visionary UF breeder who pioneered the development of the Southern Highbush (low-chill, tropical, evergreen) varietal type.
In 1976, Dr. Sharpe released ‘Sharpblue,’ the first variety of this groundbreaking type. His innovation laid the foundation for what has become one of the most transformative developments in the blueberry industry — an advancement that today represents nearly 50% of global blueberry production. His impact and vision continue to shape the industry and inspire future generations of breeders.
“Fifty years later, we honor his achievement, innovation, and foresight by introducing a new variety that carries his legacy forward — ‘Sharper,’” said Dr. Patricio Munoz, the University of Florida blueberry breeder, at the Florida Blueberry Growers Association fall meeting.
‘Sharper’ defines the Premium Category without sacrificing productivity. It has exceptional flavor, jumbo-sized fruit, excellent texture, and a pleasant fruity aroma.
“I am excited to bring this variety to growers and contribute to the growing industry of blueberries,” said Dr. Munoz.
“Florida blueberry growers are rapidly adopting this variety, already reaching 12% of the acreage planted in south-central Florida and 5% in central Florida,” said Doug Phillips, University of Florida blueberry extension coordinator.
‘Sharper’ embodies the evolution of Dr. Sharpe’s vision — a variety that celebrates the past while setting new standards for the future of premium blueberries.
