Executive Director's Letter Spring 2025

Dear Valued Members,

As we step into a new season, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the dedication and resilience of our blueberry growers. Your hard work sustains not only our farms but also the communities and industries that rely on the fruits of your labor. In the face of challenges, we stand together, stronger than ever.

One of the key issues impacting our industry today is the ongoing challenge of tariffs. While trade policies fluctuate, we are actively engaging with policymakers to advocate for fair agreements that protect our growers and open new opportunities for increased market share. While tariffs can create short-term pressures, they also offer an opportunity for Florida blueberries to gain a stronger foothold in the domestic market. As imports face increased costs, there is potential for more buyers to turn to high-quality, locally grown blueberries, giving our farmers a competitive advantage. We are working to ensure that retailers and consumers recognize the value of fresh, Florida-grown blueberries, strengthening demand and bolstering profitability.

Another critical issue facing our industry is the potential downsizing of Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices due to funding cuts. These offices are instrumental in providing essential support to our growers, from disaster relief programs to loan assistance and conservation efforts. Reductions in staffing or closures could significantly impact the availability of resources that many of our farmers rely on. We are actively advocating for sustained funding and staffing levels at FSA offices, ensuring that our growers continue to have access to the guidance and financial support they need to thrive.

Despite these challenges, there is so much to be hopeful for in our industry. Innovation in farming practices, new market opportunities, and the continued enthusiasm of blueberry lovers everywhere keep our industry thriving. We are seeing greater consumer demand, advancements in technology, and increased collaboration among growers, researchers, and industry leaders. Together, we are shaping a bright and prosperous future.

Thank you for your passion and perseverance. We remain committed to supporting you, advocating for you, and celebrating the incredible work you do every day. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any concerns, ideas, or success stories—we want to hear from you!

With appreciation and optimism,

Catherine “Cat” Canone

Executive Director
